Orange Shirt Day Workshop with Emily Shostal and Rachel DeCicco

Join Emily Shostal and Rachel DeCicco on Thursday September 28th to learn the significance of Orange Shirt Day and to create your own shirt to wear on Saturday September 30th in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.

In this drop-in style workshop, participants will be educated on the origin of Orange Shirt Day and learn about the history and legacy of the Residential School system. Wearing an orange shirt on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation is a way to honour Survivors of Residential Schools, and to remember the children who never made it home.

Visit orangeshirtday.org for information about the Orange Shirt Society, and for suggestions on where to purchase shirts from Indigenous-owned businesses/retailers.

Participants are invited to bring their own Orange Shirt to use for this workshop, or purchase one onsite for $8.00 (please indicate shirt size upon registration).

Participants are encouraged to take part in Local Gatherings in the community on Saturday September 30th and to uplift Indigenous voices, reflect, learn, listen, and actively work towards reconciliation.

A note from the facilitators:

EMILY SHOSTAL:

Hello! I am Emily Shostal, and I am from Sandy Bay Ojibway First Nation. I am a first-year Queen's Medical student and have been living in Kingston for the past few years. I am thrilled to be facilitating this Orange Shirt Day event that I had the pleasure of helping create over the summer. During this event, my co-facilitator, Rachel, and I will be educating you on the origin of Orange Shirt Day and the history and legacy of the Residential School system while helping you create your own Orange Shirt. I cannot wait to learn and create with you all!

RACHEL DECICCO:

Hi everyone! My name is Rachel and I am Métis from Coquitlam, BC and am in my third year of life sciences at Queen’s. I’m excited to be co-facilitating this activity in honour of National Day for Truth and Reconciliation with Emily and can’t wait to learn with you all about the significance of this day.
