Why have your wedding at the Tett Centre?
Why should someone have their wedding at The Tett? What is unique about it? What makes it special?
When couples and their guests arrive at The Tett Centre for Creativity and Learning, their first impressions are of the architecture. The exposed limestone walls, the industrial beams, the tall tower at the end of the long building, set close to the shore of Lake Ontario, give clues the building’s original purpose. Built in the mid-19th Century, the building was part of the Morton Brewery and Distillery.
In 2015, the City of Kingston renovated the building with the vision of it becoming a creative arts hub in the city. That is what is unique and special about the Tett Centre.
As wedding guests make their way down the hallways, they are able to look into the studios of eight arts organizations, eight Creativity Studio artists, and a variety of rental spaces, including the Gallery and Activity Room where artists exhibit their artwork and teach workshops. There is always something creative happening at The Tett Centre! Guests are also welcome to sit on the outdoor, lakeside patio of the fully-licensed Juniper Café – a very popular hangout for locals and university students.
What room(s)/space(s) do you recommend for weddings?
The Malting Tower is our finest rental space which offers a balance of old world historical charm with modern technical features in order to make your event memorable. This versatile light-filled space is a perfect choice for weddings, and other special events.
Surrounded by breathtaking lake views and framed with large windows, the bright social space features automatic blinds, a one-touch operated gas fireplace and a projector screen with easy iPod plug-in. A hi-tech sound system is also available to rent. Reflected sound makes vocals and instruments appear more personified, providing guests with a compelling concert experience. The beautifully finished floor ties the 1,600 sq. ft space together. There is a fully-equipped servery kitchen for catering, a cloakroom, round and rectangular tables, upholstered chairs and courtesy style seating for guests. Cocktail tables are available to rent.
Often our wedding clients will also rent the Rehearsal Hall for a cocktails. This is a great idea when there is a significant furniture change; for example, in between the ceremony and a dinner reception. The 1,500 sq. ft Rehearsal Hall has exposed limestone walls, 12-foot ceilings, a semi-sprung floor, and windows providing natural light.
What do weddings typically feel like?
The Malting Tower is bright and airy during the day, and cozy and intimate in the evening, when the fireplace is on and the lights are dimmed. During the warmer months, guests can watch boats sail by on the lake and in the winter, the snowfall on the ice can seem endless and magical.
What is the catering/liquor licensing situation?
Our wedding clients are welcome to choose their own licensed caterers! More information about our catering policies can be found on our website at www.tettcentre.org.
What size weddings can you accommodate? What is the most ideal?
80 – 100 seated at round tables during a sit-down dinner reception, 120 seated theatre-style during a ceremony, and 150 for a cocktail party setting.
How far in advance do you recommend booking? What time of year would you recommend (ease of booking/weather/etc.)?
We find that most of our clients plan their weddings 8 months to a year in advance. Of course, we encourage couples to contact us whether they are planning their wedding one month or two years in advance!
